The Invader - September & October 2006

An all-volunteer, non-profit organization to the restoration,
display and operation of former military aircraft.

LET’S TALK VOLUNTEERS

Without the wonderful contribution of our many volunteers...

The Squadron doesn’t exist except for all of the many volunteers and their vital contributions. Especially during the airshow when hundreds of volunteers make it all happen. This year again many worked hard in the boiling sun to sell tickets and to park cars. Many others worked the flight line and all of the other areas of need. Thanks to all of you. Throughout the year as the many projects take shape the Wednesday and Saturday volunteers toil to bring about the results that we all enjoy. Pat Furgeson’s efforts to paint the tank and the ambulance as well as the B-4 maintenance stand have finalized these projects. Don Bell organized the ambulance work with countless hours by his team consisting of Steve Evans and Hank Barrows. Steve and Hank also put forth many hours to move the C- 45 to near completion. Hanks son Patrick of San Diago made seat cessions and waist covers for the A-26. Even his wife Joan created streamers for the planes as well as creating the beautiful flower gardens. Many of which she donated to the Squadron at no cost.

This is indeed a family affair when it comes to volunteers. Branson and wife Melinda were here Saturday night of the airshow well after midnight repairing the primary generator to keep our vendors operating.

Special thanks to Steve Kenney of Nationwide Rental and HAS member Jim Sullivant for the free use of the generator and the midnight replacement to keep the show on.

By the way it was Pat Ferguson who roasted the pig for the Saturday night dinner hosted by HAS at the hangar.

How about the superb efforts of Barb Seymour for all of her organization of the volunteers. Barb is and was everywhere doing an outstanding job. She was even responsible for a lot of the excellent publicity for the show. A lady of many hats.

Then there was Diane McDaniel who put together the honoree program with the WASP and Rosie Riveters.

Warren Roberts and his flight line crew did a great job on the flight line once again. There was many compliments from the pilots. Jerry, Wayne, Bruce were everywhere. Speedy made a trip to Toledo and Cincinnati for the squadron during the show.

Melinda and Amy worked for hours behind the scenes doing the vital job with finances. Ramiro and his associates hauled trash all weekend without stop.

Dick was hard at work on the video of the show and sharing his enthusiasm with the pilots. Special thanks to ‘Scott’ Greg Morehead for all his work arranging special appearances and the dinner at Shaw’s.

All year long the Wednesday crew works endless yours on our projects. Herold was here all week end for the show.

But any attempt to mention everyone is impossible because there was just too many of you. We apologize for not having space to name everyone and extend out deepest thanks.
from your fellow squadron members.

 SQUADRON NEWS.....

HAS HANGAR DANCE IS SEPTEMBER 16 at 7:00 p.m.

The Hangar dance falls right on the heals of our Wings of Victory Airshow. Consequently there is no time to rest on our laurels of another fantastic airshow. No....we simply have to take a deep breath and enjoy the rush.

The Historical Aircraft Squadron is hosting a fund-raising event on Saturday September 16th to raise money for their new hanger and educational displays. The dance is reminiscent of a WWII USO Big Band hangar dance. The same kind of dance that entertained our troops during wartime. It will feature the Steve Samuelson Band. The dance starts at 7 P.M.. and lasts until 11 P.M.. Tickets to the dance include a light buffet dinner. Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting Kathy Ridgway at 614-899-9690 or may be purchased at the door.

The Historical Aircraft Squadron’s hangar is located at the Fairfield County Airport just north of Lancaster on the east side of State Route 33. This is also the site of their recent “Wings of Victory” airshow. The dance has become a large success in recent years.

The Historic Aircraft Squadron is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historical aircraft to educate the public about their importance in history.

This is a great opportunity for the public to relive the hangar dance of days past as well as a rare photo opportunity. Join the fun.
